Shortly after the Exotic Matter was discovered at CERN, Ezekiel Calvin found himself in a bar in Philadelphia. It was then and there that he first met Martin Schubert. Fueled by a few too many drinks, Calvin spilled the beans to Schubert about XM, and about the exogenous Shapers that Calvin believed was using XM to influence humanity. Ever the skeptic, Schubert bet that Calvin couldn't prove that the Shapers really existed. Calvin took that bet, and on the spot invited Schubert to join the team for what would become the Niantic Project.
